Greater Aushnara Union was divided in 2015, leading to the formation of Mahishmara and Kuraliya unions. The administrative journey of the current Mahishmara Union began after the Union Parishad elections in 2017.
Currently, Mahishmara Union is an important administrative unit under Madhupur Upazila in Tangail District, Bangladesh. It is one of the unions in Madhupur Upazila under the Dhaka Division, located to the east of Madhupur Upazila.
